paint was fading and plaster was falling off of three school art pieces in cafeteria
students at WMS wanted a change because the art was over 15 years old
Margie Burns Knight who is an author had an idea for this service learning project to have it based on one of her books “Talking Walls” which was a book that told personalized stories about famous walls throughout the world
to start the art piece the custodian put panels on the wall and primed them, then random drawings were made to get kids excited in making this project
a blog was made (www.wmsart.blogspot.com) to keep the community and students connected to the project
different walls had different cultural meanings and students were aloud to paint on the background of the mural
donations were made for paint and brushes, and old clothing and aprons were collected
students in each grade level took turns to paint it and also staff members
Margy and visual and performing arts specialist Argy Nestor worked with groups of kids to brainstorm ideas
former WMS students (graduates) came in to finalize the art from the students
the title “Journey was chosen because the word allows viewers to bring their own ideas of a journey to the mural
now that the art piece is made students are very proud of it and it makes the cafeteria a happier and brighter place to be

The article was basically how “Journey” was made. It talked about how they prepared the kids to paint the mural. They had talked about some other famous artists work and talked about how they could use something that they did on their mural. It also talked about how they decided on what the mural should be called and as you know they called it “Journey”.
